This marks the end of the experiment to see exactly how quickly I can become a more popular Digg user with the aid of my search engine marketing expertise.
I have to say I was worried that it wouldn't happen at one point, and that 24 hours was too short a time to attempt this kind of thing, but since 3 PM yesterday I've attained a slightly meteoric rise through the rankings of almost 30, 000 places.
As my blog continues I'll be taking questions on how I managed to pull this off and on any search/web promotion problems you may encounter - please email me at email@example.com. I appreciate your continued support.
It may confuse people that I didn't specifically push the articles I posted to Digg on the experiment itself, but rather tried to get other news promoted. I guessed that the fastest way to get promoted was to find content that affected as many people as possible, and was genuinely interesting to all concerned whilst being easy to digest.
I also found that the content should be very immediately topical - because the chances are it will take almost a day to get promoted to the front page - especially for a user with minimal friend connections on the website (thanks to those of you who added me). Also - by adding a story to a section with a lower total readership (ie. not in tech!) the story had longer to be noticed and dugg up.
It did suprise me how difficult I actually found it to find quality content that people would appreciate knowing about and learning more on. I think I now understand where slow news days come from and what a good job the Digg users do of keeping the site up to date and full of great stories and videos.
To some of you this is just stating the obvious and I appreciate that, but hopefully some people will learn how to improve the quality of Digg still further. I'll be putting up some graphs, data and pictures shortly for all those with enough time to peruse them.
